  • Writing at Weston on Trent

    Wed 26 Oct 2022

During the week commencing October 10th, the whole school focussed on an independent writing task.

We used an image from 'Gorilla' by Anthony Browne as a stimulus and had the children writing as independently as possible.

We then took the opportunity for the teachers to spend some time looking at the standard of writing across the school.

We also wanted to take the opportunity to celebrate writing with the children and to share examples of good writing which could inspire others.

This work accompanies our focus on improving writing across the school and the introduction of the Martin Harvey ISHA scheme this September.

It is exciting to see the writing journey throughout the school.

  • Democracy in action.

    Wed 22 Jun 2022

The children were learning about British Values last half term and can hopefully use their hand to help them to recall the five values. (Please see the picture below).

We have also had a couple of examples of democracy in action in school.

Firstly, the children voted to select the name of the new class; they selected the name of Starlings for the sixth class, which will be in place from September.

Also, our youngest children all suggested names for the chicks that they watched hatch in school. They then selected ten names which included Nice Chick and Dave!

  • World Ocean Day

    Sun 05 Jun 2022

Reducing the amount of single-use plastic at Weston on Trent C of E Primary School.

This year, for the first time, we are marking World Ocean Day.

United Nations World Oceans Day 2022: Revitalization - Oceanic Global

The children are aware of how harmful plastic waste can be and we have worked as a school to reduce litter dropped on the grounds. We now want to reduce the amount of single-use plastic in school. We intend to do this over time starting this week. This Wednesday, on World Oceans Day, we are asking that everyone in the school community is mindful of the amount of single-use plastic in any snacks and packed lunches brought into school. Please try to avoid bringing snacks wrapped in single-use plastic and instead use paper, foil or reusable containers.

This year, we will conduct a survey in school of how much single-use plastic the children see. We will then challenge each class to identify one action that we can take as a school to reduce the use of single-use plastic. Next year, on World Oceans Day, we will review how successful we have been and will plan our next steps.

  • Poppy the Reading Dog.

    Sat 07 May 2022 Headteacher

Wrens class are very much enjoying reading to our new volunteer- Poppy the reading dog. Poppy is joining the class weekly to spend time with the children and to give them the opportunity to read to her.

Reading and therapy dogs are known to be a good way of supporting children who suffer from anxiety and can give the children something to really look forward to at school.

Many studies have shown that reading to dogs is also a great way to improve self-confidence and public speaking skills. This is because it provides an opportunity to speak out loud, but without the judgement of human company.

  • Well done boys!

    Wed 06 Apr 2022 Headteacher

We are very proud of Ben and Rory. Having heard how hard things are for them, they wanted to do something to help the people of Ukraine. They enlisted the help of their friends in years 5 and 6 and organised a cake sale last Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

As you can see from the enormous queue, the sales were a huge success. The children were especially excited to receive a £100 donation from an anonymous donor who was so impressed by their thoughtfulness and hard work.

Altogether, they raised a fantastic £319.22.

  • The Ukraine Situation

    Mon 07 Mar 2022

The situation in Ukraine is very upsetting and concerning for everyone. Some of the children are very aware of what is going on and we have talked about what is happening in Collective Worship with the older children. The key focus was on ensuring that the children are accessing news from platforms that are appropriate to their age and level of understanding. We also talked about what we might be able to do to help, especially as there is a Ukrainian centre in the village.

Last week, we contacted the centre to see what we could do to help as a school. They informed us that they would be taking resources to people rendered homeless by the situation and told us which items would be most use. We shared the list on Thursday and by the end of Friday we had collected the things pictured below. We were truly touched by the generosity shown by our families.

As this situation is likely to continue for some time, we have put a box in reception so that we can continue to collect and to help people forced to leave their homes.

Please see below for advice about how best to discuss this very concerning situation with children.

  • Visit by Matt Goodfellow

    Mon 28 Feb 2022

The children (and staff) were very excited to host a visit by Matt Goodfellow this month.

He was very funny as well as inspiring for the children. His poetry dealt with lots of challenging ideas and issues but in a very approachable and entertaining way. Matt talked to the children about their feelings and how to maintain good mental health.

This resonated with work we have done recently in school with the appointment of a mental health first aider (Miss Hemsley) and staff mental health training with Nina Jackson just before half term.

  • Weston's lending library.

    Tue 23 Nov 2021 Headteacher

The Weston lending library is going down a storm. The children are really enjoying taking a range of books home to read and then returning them for someone else to enjoy.
