Modeshift Active Travel

At Weston on Trent Primary School, we strive to make our travel to and from school as smart and active as possible. On this page there is a lot of information about the initiatives we have carried out to raise awareness.

Modeshift STARS is the national schools awards scheme that has been established to recognise schools that have demonstrated excellence in supporting cycling, walking and other forms of sustainable travel.

The scheme encourages schools across the country to join in a major effort to increase levels of sustainable and active travel in order to improve the health and well-being of children.

Every school in England can participate in Modeshift STARS for free and on completion of an application will automatically have a national standard School Travel Plan.

We are taking part in the national Modeshift Sustainable Travel Accreditation & Recognition for Schools award initiative which aims to:

  • increase opportunities for daily physical activity by promoting active and healthier ways of travelling to school such as walking, cycling and scooting;
  • make a contribute to improving air quality;
  • help reduce traffic congestion;
  • promote safer and sustainable ways of travelling for all journey modes.

Travelling to school

When travelling to school, please think about your mode of transport. Can you travel in a more sustainable way that promotes exercise, safety around the school and is better for the environment?

  • Walking is good for exercise, keeps cars off the roads and is better for the environment.
  • Park and Stride - if you need to come by car, can you park away from school and walk the rest of the way? This makes the outside of school safer as there are fewer cars.  You can use the Village Hall or The Coopers Arms to park.
  • Scoot or ride to school. This is good for exercise and again, keeps car use down. We have a bike rack and storage for your wheeled transport.
  • Car sharing is better than every family coming in separate cars.
  • Using public transport.
  • If you do have to come by car, please park sensibly and with courtesy. Do not block residents driveways or junctions, and please do not sit in your car with the engine idling. This will cause air pollution around the school.

Bikeability

Bikeability is the government’s national cycle training programme. It helps you learn practical skills and understand how to cycle on today’s roads.
Our children in year 5 and 6 have taken part in Bikeability in September to develop their cycling skills.

Level 1 teaches you:

Maintain your cycle: make sure your ride is in tip-top condition and make simple repairs

Glide: smooth, calm and collected

Control your bike: including setting off, cruising, slowing down, braking and stopping. You’ll even learn to pedal one handed!

Pedal: without feeling wobbly or out of control

Be aware of your surroundings: looking behind and turning around obstacles

Level 2 teaches you to:

Start and stop with more confidence

Pass stationary vehicles parked on a road

Understand the road: signals, signs and road markings

Negotiate the road: including quiet junctions, crossroads and roundabouts

Share the road with other vehicles
