Today is National Poetry Day! It is the annual mass celebration on the first Thursday of October every year that encourages everyone to make, experience and share poetry with family and friends. This year, we come together because voices, words and stories help to bridge understanding in our community at Weston. We will be holding a poetry recital today in recognition of this day.

Please take the opportunity to share a poem with your children today!

  • Trips Galore!

    Mon 12 Jun 2023

It has been a very strange few years for schools and in many ways we are still seeing the effects of COVID on the school population. One really joyful thing, and sign that we are back to normality, is the amount of trips and visits that we have been able to facilitate this year.

Right from the start of the year, we have had children out and about. Year 6 thoroughly enjoyed their residential during the autumn term and it has been a long-delayed ambition to get the children to the Open Centre (years 1-6 visited during the spring terms).

Children have been to The Space Centre, Derby Museum and Cromford this school year. The opportunity to again attend Young Voices caused great excitement.

The children have also been able to return to activities such as swimming; to compete with other schools at netball and have some of our dancers attend the wonderful Dance in the Forest event.

This half term, children will be visiting Sudbury Hall, competing in a mini triathlon and going to the Holocaust Centre.

It has also been a joy to have more visitors in school, whether that be Bikeability, an ancient Greek who is heading our way soon or the wonderful scientist who caused huge excitement last Friday. All in all, we are appreciating being able to give the children a broader and more outward-looking experience this year.

  • World Book Day.

    Fri 03 Mar 2023 Headteacher

We have had a fantastic World Book Day, Each class chose a different author and enjoyed their books.

In Wrens, this was Julia Donalson and the children all made characters from the story out of junk.

Robins class read books by Jon Klassen and made their own mini theatres so that they could retell their innovated versions of ‘I Want My Hat Back’. Swallows enjoyed books by Rachel Bright and Jim Field- they made their own film with the children retelling one of the stories. Starlings celebrated the works of Roald Dahl and completed some creative writing and book cover designing. There were dragon eggs all around in Kingfishers as the children responded to ‘Tell Me A Dragon’ by Jackie Morris. In Eagles, the children were creating books with mechanisms having been inspired by works by Clotilde Perrin.

At the end of the day, we had a wonderful Collective Worship where children shared what they had been doing with the rest of the school.

We also had a lovely time where the teachers went and read a story to a different class.
